Night Moves

Friday will be Conan O Brien’s last show as the host of Late Night.  In honor of this we’ll play all songs associated with late nights (After Midnight, Late In the Evening, Tonight Tonight) for Radio Free Lunch.  In case you missed it, here’s my ridiculously geeked out interview with Conan at channel 11 a few weeks ago.

Nerd!! It will be interesting to see how Conan’s move will change the late night TV landscape.  Jimmy Fallon is taking over for Conan (yikes) in March and Jay Leno will be on weeknights at 10 starting in August (gulp).  In other late night TV news–U2 will be on Letterman for a week (and everywhere else) when their new record comes out March 3. You don’t have to wait to hear it though, Dave FM presents the world premiere of No Line On The Horizon starting Friday.  We’ll be playing the crap out of it all weekend too.  Can’t wait to hear something besides “Get On Your Boots”!!

Update: Today’s Playlist

Tonight, Tonight, Smashing Pumpkins
After Midnight, Eric Clapton
Bring On The Night, Police
Last Night, The Strokes
Rebel Yell, Billy Idol
Spirit In The Night, Bruce Springsteen
McDonald’s Daily Cheese
Even The Nights Are Better, Air Supply
Nightswimming, REM
Stay Up Late, Talking Heads
Late In The Evening, Paul Simon

    Morning, Mara!
Hmmm I’m excited about new U2 but I don’t know how I feel about Jimmy taking over…

    Night Swimming – REM
    Night Moves – Bob
    Here’s to the Night – Eve 6
The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down – Joan Baez’ version is the best one
For cheese, maybe Because The Night – either Patti or Natalie
Through the Morning Through the Night – Robert Plant and Alison Krauss

  2. How about some Night Ranger…
or Corey Harts “sunglasses at night” :)

  3. Joe Miceli

    Good morning, Ladies,

Kind of a depressing song, but how about The All American Rejects – It Ends Tonight. Or Semisonic – Closing Time (Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end)

    Joe

  4. Thor

Mara, I think Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’ would be great.

  5. How about Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins?

    Have a great weekend! :)

  6. Erika

I think for the cheese, you just HAVE to play “Thriller.”

  7. Derek Lutz

    Patti Smith as “cheese”?

How about Rolling Stones “Midnight Rambler”

  8. Mitchell B

    TRIVIA:
Did you know They Might Be Giants has been on Conan more than any other band? I think just for that their song “Birdhouse in You Soul”, its about a nightlight, should be played in honor of Mr.O’Brien!

When it comes to “songs associated with late nights” there is one song written with LATE nights in mind… “25 or 6 to 4.”

  10. Hey Mara… well there are a lot of good ones out there.
Midnight Special by CCR, 3AM by Matchbox Twenty, Rebel Yell by Billy Idol (“in the midnight hour she cries more, more mo-orreee…”). Anytime you can play Billy is a good day to me.
I’m sure all of the other ones that I can think of have been mentioned so…

    later…
    Scott

I want to come down and do my radio free lunch someday…that’s my idea.

  12. Biz

How about “In the Midnight Hour” by Wilson Pickett?

    Or…

    – “Wild Night” by John Mellencamp
    – Eve6 “Here’s to the Night”
    – Matchbox 20 “3 a.m.”

  13. Jeanette

I’m still jealous you got to touch his hair…so you should play “Hair” for the cheese.

And what’s up with Leno taking over the 10pm slot every night? What about the 10pm dramas they show on NBC? Whatever.

  14. Courtney

How about “Because the night”, either the original or the cover by 10,000 Maniacs? Both versions are pretty great!

  15. Dianna

Okay this is not your typical playlist song but what about Patsy Cline’s ‘I Go Out Walking’

    Some of the words are:

    I go out walking
    After midnight
    Searching for you….

I’m as lonesome as I can be

    I go out walking
    After midnight
    Hoping your searching for me..

  16. william

How about “Bring On the Night” by The Police for the tonight theme radio free lunch. Or maybe “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight” by Spinal Tap for the cheese
    Thanks,
    William

  17. I have young kids and therefore never see late night TV – sleep is too precious. But I remember …

Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC – A late night anthem!

  18. Fuzzy

George Thorogood , he had some good songs that fit…..Reelin’ and Rocking and Night time.

Playing either of those would be like turning the awsomeness knob up to 11.

  19. Kathryn

The Night They Drove Ole’ Dixie Down _ but The Band is actually the better version…come on!

  20. Kathryn

Pat Benatar – We belong to the night…great 80′s jam!
