Go Green and Michael Jackson

Fruit and Veg

Dave-FM is sponsoring the “Go Green” Expo at the Cobb Galleria so Friday’s Radio Free Lunch will be an organic feast.  All the songs or artists will be associated with fruits and vegetables. Think “Red Hot Chili Peppers” or “Strawberry Fields Forever”.

I really wanted to do a set of all Michael Jackson (I still can’t believe it) but this was planned in advance.  Please feel free to post your comments and memories about Michael. His music will live on forever!!

  1. How about Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”? “Show me round your fruitcakes.” And there’s that awesome part in the video where they make his face out of fruits and veggies. Ooooo, and “Raspberry Beret” by Prince!!

    • Alex

I saw Micheal back in 1984, in Atlanta Fulton County stadium. I remember the first time I hear Beat it, just was great great great. I even went to break dancing camp to learn the moonwalk. When off the wall came out I remember where I was when I saw the video for Rock with You, great dance moves. I had a 1,000 watt stereo back a few years ago and the best album to rock out to was History, I had a two seat car and people would pack in just to cruse listening to Micheal…………hey hey Billie Jean is not my lover WHOOOOO…..R.I.P

    Good Morning Mara;

What an amazing news week. I wonder what will happen today. For the record, the first album I bought with my own money was the Jackson 5ive Greatest Hits. I bought it with Hanukkah money in 1971.

    On to the list:
    “Vegetable” – The Beach Boys
“Everytime I Eat Vegetables It Makes Me Think Of You” – The Ramones
“Meat is Murder” – The Smiths

Sorry, my brain isn’t fully operational.

    Neil

  3. Billy

    Orange Crush [REM]
Green Onions [Booker T and the MGs]
    Cinnamon Girl [Neil Young]
    Bananarama
And, thanks to the Insect Chef at Atl Botanical Gardens, we’ve learned that insects are organic, healthy consumables: Adam Ant, The Beatles, The Roach Sisters, etc.

  4. angela

    Black Eyed Peas
    Eagle Eye Cherry
    Bananarama

    daily cheese–Richard Cheese

I gues Meatloaf is out of the question, huh?

  5. Sparkle

How about “Glass Onion” by the beatles.

When I heard the news I grabbed my candle and hoofed it to Centennial Park. Where was everybody? I can’t wait for the video montage with the “Free Willy” song in the background.

    I jest…actually when I heard the news I though…”that sounds about right.”

  6. Andie

Angela, kudos for Richard Cheese! haha I went to his concert at the Roxy, good times!

Sarah McLachlan – “Ice Cream” – Definitely not a fruit or vegetable, but great with fruit on it.

    Second vote for “Raspberry Beret.”

For cheese – The Newbeats – “Bread and Butter” mentions jam & potatoes

or “Red Red Wine” since wine is made with grapes. I like Neil Diamond better the UB-40.

    Happy Friday!

    • Andie

I remember the school line dancing competition where we performed what was essentially the electric slide to “Man in the Mirror.” haha

Goofy note: I was very proud I had achieved the advanced stage in-line dancing and had the turning move perfectly timed to the last “change.” lol Ah, memories.

  7. Kassie

“Glass Onion”-Beatles, “Clocks”- Coldplay (Shoot an apple off my head..),”Peaches”- Presidents of the United States, “Lemon Tree”- Peter, Paul and Mary, “The Lemon Song” and “Tangerine”- Led Zeppelin, “Strange Fruit”- Jeff Buckley….I just want to say that yesterday was a very difficult day. My Mom asked me if I was having my “Elvis” day. When I asked her what she meant, she said she remembers exactly how she felt and where she was when Elvis died and he was the big icon from her generation. He inspired me to dance and I did for many years…”PYT” happened to be my song choice for my 6th grade recital. Though he got pretty strange over the years, I think we all appreciate., admire and will certainly remember what an incredible talent he was.
    RIP.

Okay, I don’t want to seem glib at all with these two things, because I am certainly not feeling glib:
    1. Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Startin Something mentions “You’re A Vegetable” I believe (if I’m understanding the lyrics correctly), so that would be a tie-in.
    2. A seminal moment in my life that involved MJ’s music: Just after HS graduation, my childhood best friend came out to me (at the roller rink). Man in the Mirror was playing at the same time. I know it wasn’t planned, and to this day I get chills when I hear the song.

  9. Sparkle

Fionna Apple – my favorite is “Extraordinary Machine”

  10. Cindy

One of my favorite memories of my now 28 year old son is of him break dancing to Billie Jean in nothing but training panties. He called him Mytell Jatson. Isn’t that cute? Please don’t tell him I told you. :-)

  11. Halley

I can’t remember the group, but please-please play that song “Peaches” – “going to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches…”

I’m a vegetarian so I love this RFL!

More than two favs for MJ, but these top the list:
Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough
    Rock With You

  12. Savannah

For RFL: Banana Pancakes – Jack Johnson

Fav. MJ songs: Beat It and Thriller
    R.I.P. Michael

  13. Kassie

It’s hard to narrow it down, but I will try.. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and
“Wanna Be Startin’ Something” with the lyric “Lift your head up high and scream out to the world..no one can hurt me now because you know what’s true- I believe in me, so you believe in you” It gives me chills to this day.

  14. Tami

It’s hard to think of just two, but I’m going to stick with the OTW album:
    -Rock With You
-Don’t Stop till You Get Enough

But I LOVE Wanna Be Startin Something and Human Nature from Thriller. :-) Sorry, had to get that in there.

  15. karen

    RFL suggestions:
    The Cranberries – Linger
    Blind Melon – No Rain
    Cheese: Peaches & Herb – Reunited :)

    for MJ:
I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but I remember watching the Thriller video over and over and over as I worked to learn the routine and of couse would show off my skills with others on dance floors from time to time. It was funny how in the movie Going on 13 that Jennifer Garner’s character used the dance to liven up the party. However, my favorite song is PYT and love the whole The Wall album as it was all the rage during my Myrtle Beach trip after high school graduation. Thanks for all the fun memories MJ and your songs continue to lift spirits each time they are played.

  16. Lisa

i think you should move the veggie RFL to another day.

Human Nature is one of favs from MJ.

  17. Ali W.

“Man in the mirror” and “Beat It”

  18. My vote on Michael Jackson songs are “Man in the Mirror”, great message in that song, almost brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I can feel the emotion and love he put into that song. I also vote for “Billie Jean” simply because it has a great beat and bass line. Thank you!

  19. Mary Lou Alto

Oh Gawd Mara the freaks are out today in full force.

OK so back from getting free air in my tires….
I can’t think about Radio free lunch –I’m so Godsmacked! over Michael Jackson….and I see you need me with some of the ahum, blogs.

my MJ faves? Billy Jean and ABC, Jackson Five.

    Carry on…….

  20. Tamara

“Peaches” – The Presidents of the United States
    “Blueberry Hill” – Louis Armstrong
    “Strawberry Fields” – The Beatles
    “Vegatable” – Radiohead
“Eat a Peach” – The Allman Brothers
“Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”- Smashing Pumpkins

    MJ – RIP

    “Black or White”
    “I’ll be There” – Jackson 5

  21. Sparkle

“Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” and “Smooth Criminal”

  22. john

how about The Kids Are Alright, by The Who?

    Makes perfect sense…

  23. Darlene

My fav MJ song is P.Y.T. and Wanna Be Startin’ somthin’!
I think that Michael transcends all genres of music, race and age. It reminds me of college parties…everyone always played the MJ. I love that you are going to play some of his music.

  24. Gina

I remember my sisters and I going to the Victory Tour at Fulton County Stadium. My sister Wendy wore the red leather jacket, I wore the white glove and my other sister Jennifer wore the white socks with black shoes. We thought we were so cool!!!
Those are priceless memories that will be with us always.
Its hard to pick two songs because there are so many but I would say my fav are PYT and Rock with you!
    Thanks Mara for doing this!

  25. Scott

My 2 songs are: Human Nature(great Quincy Jones number) & Billie Jean- mainly because of what I remember on Letterman in college .. “but ‘the Chair’is not my son..” MJ will be missed

  26. Jeannie

I feel like I have lost part of my childhood – I grew up watching the Jackson 5 on tv (in the dark ages before MTV & cable), listening to “ABC” at pool parties. I love Thriller and his solo work. No matter how weird he got, his music is great. My faves – P.Y.T. and Smooth Criminal.

  27. Now, I doubt you are allowed to play this song, but I feel like it fits too well for the Go Green topic. That song being “Sassafras Roots” by Green Day. It’s got green in the name and its about a root to make tea and root beer. Too good to pass up if you can play it.

  28. SkinnyG

MJ songs – gotta go with ‘PYT’ and ‘Rock With You’, which as kids we had a 45 of for years that just sat on our dresser…what happened Michael, what happened!?

    Green Songs-

    Secret Garden – Springsteen

Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 (about the time MJ began his transformation)

  29. blythe grady

For RFL: The Lemonheads with Mr. Hottie, Evan Dando. Love Mrs. Robinson….

As for MJ–I just have been smiling all morning listening to his music. I had forgotten how much I loved it. I WORE OUT the Thriller album…in fact, I remember it was in the spring, my parents and I were painting my bedroom and I had listened to it over and over when my mom finally requested that we turn on the radio–only to hear that Marvin Gaye had been shot.

As for my fave songs, numerous:
    Thriller
    Rock with You
    Human Nature
    PYT

  30. cynthia wilson

MJ — Human Nature (+ it can go in the RFL list for “If this town is just an apple then let me take a bite.”) and Wanna be Startin Somethin

  31. Jeanette

I love Say Say Say with Michael and Paul McCartney.

    I also love Human Nature.

  32. Megan

Can’t believe no one has mentioned
    The Beatles, Strawberry Fields Forever

    On MJ…gotta play Billie Jean…CLASSIC!!!!

  33. blythe grady

I had another memory when I was just out picking up lunch….when I was in the 6th grade, we learned the song “Ben” in our music class. It was about a rat! I don’t especially love the song but I’m pretty sure that it one of my times I had heard of Michael Jackson.

I think the biggest highlight of my summer was being at my granny’s house when the Thriller video was out–I must have watched it Mtv non-stop during that visit just so I could watch it!!!!

  34. kristinwilhoyte

My MJ memory is from when I was probably 5 years old, and “Beat It” was my favorite song…had it on cassette tape and played it on my Fisher Price cassette player. I loved to sing along, and I remember my mom and one of her friends consulting me on how to pronounce “funky”…my pronounciation was coming out slightly obscene. One of those weird memories that just stuck in my head.

My vote for best song: Billie Jean

  35. kimberlyldeuster

Thriller came out when I was 5. I had posters of Michael Jackson everywhere and as a white girl from the South, that worried my parents.

My mom took me to his concert at the Omni in 1988 for the Bad Tour. It was the first time I got ‘ready’ to go anywhere and actually cared what I wore.

He was a odd and sad man but DAMN he was talented!

    PYT & Ben!

    Kimberly
