Hi Mara,

My wife and I moved to Atlanta about a year ago and have really come to love your program, so here goes my theme: Songs in honor of 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of Species”. I mean let’s face it, traveling around the world on the HMS Beagle to look at lizards, birds, and snails, Charles Darwin was one of the great pirates of our time. So a theme based on evolution is my suggestion…

This one’s going to seem a bit weird, but my theme would have to be unintentional workplace dancing… Generally moods greatly improve on Fridays, so I found a few songs that just have a tendency to help make people a little more animated. To me, these songs start out with a head bob or a tapping foot, and end up with someone blushing.

The beauty of pirate radio is that it threatened the establishment, while at the same time joyfully capturing the zeitgeist of the 60s.

Why not spend a Friday lunch dissing the worries of our era, such as ADHD – Hyperactive (Thomas Dolby), the new 2012 movie – End of the World (REM), health care reform – Pressure (Billy Joel), Dancing with the Stars – Ball Room Blitz (Sweet), and the hunt for Osama – On the Loose (Saga).

How can you not include George Michael (Bathroom arrest, male prostitution), Michael Jackson (Child Molestation charges, child endangerment), Boy George (Drugs, male prostitution, kidnapping), Chris Brown (Domestic Abuse), Janet Jackson could do no wrong (Superbowl). Kurt Cobain Nirvana (Died)

Growing up in the 70′s & 80′s your cheese is all wrong… Kiss was the start of pirate radio, they played to concerts with the theatrics and drama under the radar for years, the record sales were an after thought. They have had members quit, die, reunite, quit again, replaced, reformed and remorphed and now sitcoms! Kiss dolls, lunch boxes, games and about anything Kiss could be put on or sold on. Hard Luck Woman is the song because about everything Kiss did was cheese.

I have been listening to radio free lunch for some time. I think this idea could be expanded upon. Adding in some scandal like Gwynn has said below all falls under this Bad Karma theme. If you keep it to bands that have been in the Pirate radio genre it really works. Maybe Some Metallica (Cliff died, James burned), Joe Satriani (Cold Play, and Chickenfoot (web of plagerism)), Social Distortion – Bad Luck, Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song, Queen – Another one bites the dust (Freddies Death). Lots to build off…

Last night I had three ideas, one was taken by Tom, I forgot the second one, I should really write down my ideas BEFORE I go to bed and I am left with the one below. You guys are creative. Mine seems weak in comparison to those above me.

To tie in with “Pirates” and “Friday the 13th”, my idea is to have a “Bad Boys of Rock” theme. The songs featured will be by bands that have been “rocked” by headline making scandals:

1. “The Kids are alright” by The Who
(Pete Townsend’s child porn scandal)

2. “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse
(Does it really need an explanation?)

3. “Little T & A” by The Rolling Stones
(Again, do I need to explain?)

4. “The End” by The Beatles
(The Paul is Dead scandal)

5. “It’s Hard to be a Saint in the City” by Bruce Springsteen
(About his alleged affair with the girl in the gym)

Being Friday the 13th I think bands or songs that have fallen on bad luck. A member that has died, bankruptcy, equipment stolen, law suits, or just a cloud of bad karma over the group. Most of these bands were pirate radio hall of famers…

Sex Pistols – Anarchy (Lost Sid, Financial issues)

The Who – Teenage Wasteland (Lost Keith & john, breakups, reunions)

Ramones – Blitzkreig Bop (Lost Joey, Johnny & Dee Dee and the revolving door of members)

MC Hammer – Cant touch this (Bankruptcy for cheese)

Spinal Tap – Big Bottom (the kings of bad karma)

I think for real world bands Def Leppard is the bad karma band. Lost Arm, Lost guitarist, Lost equipment. I think more variety of problems than anyone…
